{"id":693,"date":"2016-10-11T09:38:45","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T13:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ffr2.wpenginepowered.com\/?page_id=693"},"modified":"2024-12-23T15:24:14","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T20:24:14","slug":"design","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/gtm-supercar\/design\/","title":{"rendered":"Design"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3>\n\t\tGTM Frame &#038; Chassis\n\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading='false' src=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2016\/05\/gtm-aluminum.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h3>Aluminum Under Glass<\/h3><p>The GTM Supercar kit is engineered to be built by a person at home with regular tools. \u00a0The GTM kit gives you everything you need to build your car, except for running gear parts taken from a 1997-2004 Chevrolet C5 Corvette and a transaxle. \u00a0The major Corvette parts include the engine, front and rear control arms, suspension\/brakes, and fuel tanks. \u00a0The transaxle used is a Porsche 911 unit or a Mendeola 5 speed.<\/p>\n\t\n\t<h1>The GTM\u00a0Frame &amp; Chassis<\/h1>\n<p>The Factory Five GTM\u2008uses an ultra-strong space frame and is joined by a matrix of aluminum sub-frame panels to complete a true race-car construction. Built on the strong foundation of this tough chassis is a four\u00a0corner coil-over shock suspension with unequal length control arms and massive Corvette brakes. The composite body rests on top of this chassis and is a separate unstressed assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The performance and success of the GTM is dependant first and foremost on the quality and strength of the frame. When the editor of Car and Driver magazine, Larry Webster, commented that the car handled the monster LS7 power &#8220;better than the Z06 Corvette&#8221;, it was due primarily to the design and strength of the space frame. Our engineering team spent over five years and countless hours on the computer and at the track to make sure the frame is stronger and more rigid than you&#8217;ll ever need.<\/p>\n\t<h4>The performance and success of the GTM is dependant first and foremost on the quality and strength of the frame. When the editor of Car and Driver magazine, Larry Webster, commented that the car handled the monster LS7 power &#8220;better than the Z06 Corvette&#8221;, it was due primarily to the design and strength of the space frame.<\/h4>\n\t<div id=\"image-map-pro-5003\"><\/div>\n\t<p><strong>A Great Car Starts with a Great Chassis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the very core of the GTM Supercar is a computer designed, ultra-rigid space-frame. The frame is made of mig-welded, high strength 1020 and mild carbon steel tubing and plate steel. This special design incorporates a low center of gravity, high torsional rigidity, and solid safety features that delivers true Supercar performance in a safe and secure vehicle design.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solidworks\u00ae CAD designed frame with low center of gravity with high strength.<\/li>\n<li>Surface finish is powder-coated in beautiful gloss black finish<\/li>\n<li>Manufactured on a computer designed frame jig with 0.02&#8243;tolerances and made from high quality DOM tubing.<\/li>\n<li>Integral 6 point roll cage with roof-contoured bars for additional headroom in cockpit<\/li>\n<li>Safety designed collapsible steering column design and mounts<\/li>\n<li>Safety designed side impact bars, footbox protection and front\/rear crumple zones.<\/li>\n<li>Twin fuel cell location centralized in chassis (similar to corvette design) aides in impact protection.<\/li>\n<li>Bolt-on rear transmission mount makes install and replacements easy<\/li>\n<li>Steel floor pans and sheeted flat bottom design aides aero\/downforce and improves safety.<\/li>\n<li>Welded mount plates &#8220;ready-to-bolt-on&#8221; for engine, transmission, pedal box, radiator, steering gear, suspension, and shift linkages.<\/li>\n<li>Hood, doors, and rear hatch mount to frame, not body shell.<\/li>\n<li>Frame design allows for ultra-low engine placement for low vehicle center of gravity.<\/li>\n<li>Mid-engine design has good weight distribution, but even better mass centralization (heavy parts of vehicle towards center).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2016\/07\/HPCircleLogo300dpi-1.jpg.webp\" alt=\"HPCircleLogo300dpi\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" \/>Our welded parts are made in the USA with American labor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2016\/07\/Solidworks_logo.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Print\" width=\"83\" height=\"50\" \/>The Factory Five Mk4 frame is computer designed on Solidworks\u2122 software using Hewlett Packard workstations.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tGTM Running Gear\n\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading='false' src=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2016\/05\/gtm-running-gear.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/kits\/mk4-roadster\/mk4-roadster\/design\/composite-body\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>\t\t\t\n\t<h2>GTM Running Gear<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2016\/10\/gtm-running-gear-2.jpg.webp\" alt=\"gtm-running-gear-2\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>A famous person once wrote that a man has got to know his limitations. Our engineering team applied the lessons they learned developing and racing in the Factory Five Challenge Series to design a world-class suspension for the GTM.<\/p>\n<p>We selected the tough and lightweight aluminum Corvette control arms and matched them to proprietary frequency selective dampening coil-over shocks and springs developed with the team at KONI Shocks. The FSD KONIs deliver razor sharp handling at modest speeds, while maintaining Supercar manners at Supercar pace.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tGTM Interior\n\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading='false' src=\"https:\/\/www.factoryfive.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2016\/05\/gtm-interior.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\n\t<h2>GTM\u00a0Interior<\/h2>\n<p>The GTM kit comes with a complete interior including, sport seats, carpeting, headliner, roll cage covers, covered interior panels, door panels, engine cover, rear bulkhead, dash assembly, carbon fiber dash face, complete gauge set, and directional vents for heating and cooling. Covered interior pieces contrast with the carbon fiber gauge pod and functionally elegant layout of the interior.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone asks, &#8220;Do I fit?&#8221; For a car that is only 42&#8243; high, the cockpit space is remarkable. Sitting in the car you&#8217;ll find a large and quiet cockpit with good front and rear visibility and modern temperature controls. Following a careful entry and exit, you&#8217;ll find head-room, legroom and front\/rear visibility that is surprisingly well executed.
